How the International REC Standard works for Egyptian generators and buyers, and how I-RECs reduce reported Scope 2 emissions.
An I-REC (International REC) is a certificate representing one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a specific, registered source — most commonly renewable generation. In Egypt, an eligible generation device is registered under the International REC Standard, its output is metered, and one certificate is issued per MWh produced. Companies buying electricity can procure and redeem I-RECs matched to their consumption to claim renewable or attribute-specific energy use, and to reduce Scope 2 emissions reported under the GHG Protocol's market-based method.
Eligibility basics.
Owners or operators of an eligible generation facility can register that device, provided it meets the applicable metering and evidence requirements of the I-REC Standard as administered locally.
Different instruments, different claims.
An I-REC certifies the attributes of energy generation (source, location, vintage) and supports Scope 2 electricity claims. A carbon credit represents a tonne of emissions avoided or removed and is typically used against Scope 1/3 or residual emissions. They are not interchangeable and should not be double-counted for the same claim.
